Easter Sunday marks the beginning of 50 days of celebrating! For Easter is not a day - it’s an entire season. More specifically, it is a season to celebrate “one feast day, or better as one great Sunday.” (General Norms for the Liturgical Year #22) The Easter season is the oldest season of the Church year. By the end of the second century, two annual festivals had developed in the Church: Pascha and Pentecost. Pascha is what we know today as the Easter Triduum (“three days”) celebrating the resurrection and Pentecost (“fifty days”) celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit. So it’s easy to see why this season of special days is called “one great Sunday.”
